The Universities Australia Marketing, Communications and Development Conference is a fantastic event, currently held every second year and this year was our first UAMCD as major sponsors. We had an amazing time attending and flying the Outfit flag and were thoroughly impressed with the agenda over the two days.
The UAMCD Conference is a rare opportunity to learn from some of Australia's brightest minds in the University sector as they come together to discuss and commentate on the state of Marketing for Australian Universities.
Here are a few of the highlights from the conference:
Dr Christine O’Connell’s session on Wednesday afternoon was an amazing way to finish up the first day, with some thought provoking content around being understood by your audience.
Although framed in the context of scientists presenting to non-scientific folk, or in the center's words on their expertise, “The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science empowers scientists and health professionals to communicate complex topics in clear, vivid, and engaging ways” Dr O'Connell's talk was still hugely relevant to the majority of the audience being from a Marketing function at their respective Universities.
As people, regardless of our profession, we are challenged everyday with understanding and being understood. So much of what drives marketing decisions is the concept of resonating with the audience, so I felt this was a hugely beneficial session. Perfect topic, perfect presentation.
A little left of field but extremely engaging was Tanya Hosch. Tanya is the woman behind the “recognise” campaign, driving awareness to Reconciliation Australia. In this instance, however, she was presenting from her more recent position with the AFLW as their General Manager of Inclusion and Social Policy.
Focussing heavily on the role equality has played as a platform for the AFLW’s launch, Tanya covered her grass roots approach to the campaign, but also her views on the topic of ‘inclusion’ for a University when aiming for social impact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. I was extremely impressed with Tanya’s honesty, grit and to-the-point presentation. My highlight of the conference.
The breakout sessions were lead by industry professionals, with a few of our clients delivering some awesome insights. We caught a great session with Pia McMorran from The University of Sydney on managing agency relationships.
I can’t speak highly enough of the conference and we cannot wait for the next one!
